Look. I am the monster.
Look. I am madness.
Look. I am truth.
Look.
I am the unreason which is immutably joined with reason. I am
the hidden face of the bright-eyed one; lift Her helmet, see the mass of writhing
snakes. I am the monster who cannot be conquered or vanquished; you may no more
be rid of me than you can separate the back of a coin from its front.
You do not wish to see, of course. You do not want to know me.
Why should you? I am the monster, and monsters are frightening. So you deny me,
and turn to the light. But the more you look away, and you always look away,
the stronger I am made. And so I am strong, very strong. And I may not be ignored.
Lean in closely and I will tell you a secret: it is not my ugliness
that petrifies, but your fear of my ugliness. For I am truth, and that is beyond
both ugliness and beauty.
It is true, I will deeply disturb the order of your life, and
that is a blessing. For what I destroy is merely the frightful peace that comes
when you will not look.
Accustom your eyes to the dark, and look.
