Fortuna Victrix ("Fortune the Conqueror") is a title
of the Roman Goddess of Luck and Fate, perhaps in Her aspect of unstoppable
Fate. She seems to have been the name of one of the twin Fortunes worshipped
at Antium, with Fortuna Felix ("Happy Fortune");
on coins commemorating Her famous shrine and oracle there, Fortuna Victrix is
shown wearing a helmet and holding out a patera, or small bowl used in
offerings. She was also a Goddess to whom leaders or soldiers prayed for victory
in battle.
This is as good a place as any to mention that Fortuna also had
specific aspects tailored to bringing good fortune to different types of leaders;
in addition to Fortuna Augusta, who oversaw the fortunes
of the Emperor, there were Fortuna Comes ("Fortuna of Officials",
or "Fortuna of Soldiers") and Fortuna Dux ("Fortuna of Generals").
