Demeter is the Greek Goddess of agriculture, especially grains like wheat and barley. She is also associated with poppies, as they tend to grow wild with wheat. Statues of Goddesses with poppy pods tucked in Their crowns are known from Minoan times, and may perhaps be an early form of Demeter; at any rate poppies were still associated with Her in Classical times.
Poppies are of course known for being the source of opium and it derivatives, powerful painkillers still used today. Accordingly Demeter as a poppy Goddess is also Demeter as a healer.
Done in scratchboard to look like an old black-figure vase painting, like the recent Ekhidna piece.
