Eir is a healing Goddess of the Norse; Her name means 'protection' or 'help'. She is one of nine Goddesses Who attend the lady Menglöð, perhaps a form of Freyja, Who live on the holy mountain of Lyfjaberg ('Hill of Healing'). Offerings to Them are said to keep all illness from the offerer. I have shown Her here holding a sickle with which to cut herbs; drying behind Her are plantain, used for cuts, and yarrow, to staunch bleeding. With the sickle She also holds a little bouquet of opium poppies, from which powerful painkillers are still made.
