 
Argos is one of the oldest seats of the worship of Hera, the Greek Great Goddess Who was originally concerned (probably) with youth and renewal. The cuckoo, a harbinger of the returning springtime, has been Her bird since time immemorial; and She is shown here with a female cuckoo and a sprig of uncurling greenery, clad in somewhat Mycenaean clothes.
